Game of Thrones
Game of Thrones is a fantasy drama set in the medieval kingdom of Westeros where kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars and honest Ghum Hai KisiKey Pyaar Meiin Written Update men play out an epic war for control of the Iron Throne. It's also a story of love, betrayal and revenge. The show, based on George R.R. Martin's best-selling book series A Song of Ice and Fire, has a reputation for delivering some shocking TV moments.
The infamous Red Wedding of season one is probably the most shocking Game of Thrones moment of all time. Even fans who had read the books were not prepared for Lord Walder Frey to betray the Starks and their allies by marrying Robb's pregnant lover, Talisa, for his own personal gain. This led to the deaths of many beloved characters including Robb, Catelyn Stark and Talisa, and ended the Northern rebellion.
Although it was hinted at the end of season two that Jon Snow wasn't Ned Stark's son, it took until season five for the truth to come out. It was revealed that he was actually the offspring of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen, making him the rightful heir to the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. This was a massive twist that shocked fans all over the world, but especially in the UK where the show is filmed.
While some scenes from the show have been shocking, few have been as heartbreaking as Hodor's death. The character was a beloved servant of the House of Baratheon, but after Stannis' camp was burned by Ramsay Bolton leaving him with only his family and some horses, desperate times call for desperate measures.
This is when the character of Cersei Lannister stepped up her game and turned from a bitchy gold digger to full-on evil. She betrayal of her fiance Joffrey and her attempt to sabotage her own daughter's wedding was just as shocking as it was cruel. Even the show's producers were shocked by this turn of events, with co-showrunners David Benioff and D.B Weiss revealing that the writers received three huge spoilers from Martin himself during a 2013 meeting.
Orphan Black
Over its five-season run (2013-17) on Space in Canada and BBC America in the US, Orphan Black was a quiet, critically acclaimed hit that never screamed "look at me!" but quietly established itself as one of the most innovative, compelling, and smart sci-fi thrillers around. In a TV landscape full of cliches and rip-offs, the series stood out with its deep science fiction conspiracies, compelling character arcs, and brilliant performances by Tatiana Maslany as multiple Project Leda clones.
While Orphan Black often featured high-stakes drama and action, it also delved into darker themes like addiction and abuse, particularly with the drug-addicted Mrs. S and her foster daughter Kira, whose inexplicable powers are often used as a red herring by the Neolution henchmen. Even the show's finale, which wrapped up with a birth, death, and the clones finally finding their freedom, was poignant and thought-provoking.
But perhaps what made Orphan Black truly stand out was its cast of incredibly diverse characters and the skillful portrayals of them by its excellent ensemble cast. Most notably, Maslany's ability to transform herself into the multiple personalities of the clones. From British Sarah to uptight American housewife Alison and to feral Ukrainian clone Helena, Maslany's acting chops are evident every time she steps into another skin.
The series also set itself apart by focusing as much on the relationships between its leads as it did on its larger conspiracy, and for that reason, it was no surprise when Orphan Black ended with a final episode that rewounds the clock to show Sarah taking her daughter back to reunite with the surviving members of Clone Club. It was a fittingly bittersweet — and unexpected — way to end the show that helped to redefine what it meant to be family.
Despite its impressive production values and high-quality writing, Orphan Black did not have the same commercial success as other shows at the time of its cancellation. But it left behind a legacy of innovation and a passionate fan base that was as dedicated to the show as its creators and star. The producers made an effort to engage with the show's devoted cult following, encouraging fan artwork and even incorporating some of their suggestions for dialogue and props into later episodes. In this era of peak TV, Orphan Black's commitment to fan engagement is an inspiration.
The Walking Dead
AMC's The Walking Dead is one of the most beloved TV shows in history, and with the show preparing to enter its final season it's a good time to look back on some of the series' biggest twists. Throughout its run, the show hasn't been shy about shocking viewers with brutal violence and gruesome deaths, but there have also been some surprising twists that have completely changed the game.
The show follows a group of survivors in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by zombies. The ensemble cast, led by Andrew Lincoln and Norman Reedus, consists of many different characters who band together to survive. As they struggle to stay alive, the survivors must confront each other and others who want to control them and their resources. Ultimately, the survivors of The Walking Dead must decide who they truly are in this brutal new world.
While there are many notable character arcs in The Walking Dead, one of the most impressive is Carol Peletier's evolution from timid abuse victim to badass walker-killer. Her ultimate revelation in Season 4 showed just how far she was willing to go to protect the people closest to her. It was a heartbreaking moment, but it also made sense for her and highlighted how much she had grown as a person over the course of the series.
One of the most shocking twists in The Walking Dead came in the form of a character death that many fans didn't see coming. Despite being an unpopular figure, Glenn was one of the most likable characters on the show and his death was devastating for many viewers. The episode was even more poignant because it occurred shortly after the return of Hershel, who had lost his arm in the war against the Saviors.
In addition to a number of other twists, the series' ninth season has seen some major shakeups at Alexandria. The arrival of The Whisperers shook things up as they threatened to turn the population into mindless zombies. There were also a few unexpected twists in the form of the departures of some of the show's long-standing actors.
Fringe
Despite the show"s short run, "Fringe" made a habit of creating shocking moments and twists. Some of them, like Olivia Dunham"s whisked to a parallel universe in which the World Trade Center still stands, have been criticized for being exploitative or insensitive, but others have simply defined the series. In particular, the Season 1 finale"s revelation that all the characters are monitors is an omnipresent conceit that shaped every action and plot development in subsequent seasons.
